Dahlia’s Corner 2024

Question:
How can we increase our understanding of the natural world in order to create empathy towards it?

Narrative explaination:

-I enjoy gardening but I know a lot of people especially in cities find it challenging, so I want to find alternatives. I want to explore ways of bringing nature back to people that live in cities like NYC/ how to create sustainability in these spaces.
-Educational tools but also products that look appealing.

Platform narrative explaination:

The part one how-to video explains crops that start being sowed in February (indoors). This is a method of obtaining seeds affordably. Once you have the seeds, you can keep track on their progress using the journal that is specifically catered to NYC watering times throughout the spring and into summer season, and then follow the times for the late summer to early fall season as well. The map is a way to build community in order to gain further insight on gardening, wether that’s visiting a community or botanical garden or a plant store.

Digital Map. Upon clicking on each location, one will find a list of botanical gardens, community gardens, and plant stores in all 5 boroughs. Wherever you live, there would be an accessible public resource for gardening.

This Journal is a way to keep track of what you plant, what happens to the crops over time, watering schedule, and season times. Each section is specific to NYC.

Throughout the process, I went back to how I could answer the question of “How can we increase our understanding of the natural world in order to create empathy towards it?”.  A lot of that empathy seemed to show up through understanding of how to garden, which is why I decided to go through the education route.
